How explosive atmospheres are caused

In industry, explosive atmospheres can occur wherever flammable gases, liquids, or dusts are used—whether in the storage and processing of pulp in paper mills, in the processing of aluminum and magnesium dusts in metalworking plants, or at battery charging stations, for example, for industrial trucks or emergency power systems. Here, the release of oxyhydrogen gas (hydrogen) can create an explosive atmosphere that requires special protective measures.

The Explosion Protection Document – The Basis for all Technical and Organizational Measures

The diversity of these examples shows that explosion protection is not only relevant for traditional chemical plants, but also for a wide variety of other industrial sectors. In accordance with the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, an explosion protection concept must be drawn up in such cases, which assesses hazards and documents protective measures.

The explosion protection document forms the basis for all technical and organizational measures in the company. It describes the areas affected, defines zones, and documents how, for example, ignition sources are excluded and risks minimized. Regular review of these measures is required by law and is crucial for the safety of employees and facilities.

The recurring inspection of potentially explosive areas in accordance with the BetrSichV (German Industrial Safety Regulation) includes checking all relevant operating equipment, reviewing labeling, and evaluating the effectiveness of the protective measures taken.
